When AI Overviews launched, traffic dropped overnight. Almost everyone blamed the wrong thing. The story went: "ChatGPT is eating Google's lunch." Wrong. ChatGPT had been around for years before anyone really noticed it, and LLM traffic still sits at around 1% of search volume. The actual culprit was Google itself. AIOs launched, informational searches stopped clicking through, and any site relying on top-of-funnel content took the hit. Here's the part nobody talks about enough: it's actually better than what you had before. Customers arriving from an AIO/LLM journey are dramatically higher quality. They've already done the research. They know what they want, what they should pay, what the trade-offs are. They skip the walkthrough. They buy. LLM traffic by volume: ~1%. I've been digesting all the Google news from the past week, and it's pretty wild how much they're hitting the gas on AI—regardless of what it does to the existing "10 blue links" search paradigm. AI Overviews are going to be the norm in searches, and they're going to do everything to keep you there: There's now a speech box at the bottom of these summaries that takes you right to AI Mode when you engage with it. Also starting this week for its top-tier Gemini Ultra users, Google's making available information agents—essentially bots that will search and monitor topics for you, bringing information when they have it. And Gemini Spark is an agent for your Google stuff, which, as I understand it, will do the tedious work across its app suite—Maps, Docs, Gmail, etc.—so you don't even have to go through a checklist for every project. Gemini just does that for you. All their stuff is directionally moving Google to being an answer engine instead of a search engine. What's wild is that that Google built a gigantic business around monetizing organizing the world's information. It pointed you in the direction of where you wanted to go, then sold digital billboards that advertisers could show you along the journey. Now Google IS the destination, or at least that's the vision. From this past I/O, it feels to me that the company has discarded any apprehension about cannibalizing its existing business model. It appears confident that it will adapt to this new world, and it has reason to be optimistic: Its earnings from this past quarter showed revenue from Search (mixed with "other," to be precise) were up almost 20%. We may be seeing the end of 10 blue links. But it's far from the end of Google.

Ever feel like you're a dog who's seeing a squirrel for the first time, and you have to chase it? Well, that's how I am feeling as a marketing leader. For the first time in a long time, there's a new place to reach buyers as they actively research. OpenAI opened ChatGPT ads to any US advertiser. No agency, no minimum spend, just register and go. Will it perform? Will have to see as CTR is sitting around 1.3% industry-wide versus 29.2% on Google Search. First step, I am telling my team to build the measurement before spending a dollar. A channel with no benchmarks means your first 60 days of data becomes the benchmark. Before anything else, get the pixel on your site. OpenAI has a JavaScript pixel that tracks clicks within ChatGPT and maps them to conversions on your site. Without it you have clicks and nothing else. Drop it on every page, add the lead event to your demo and contact forms, and confirm it fires. The API is more accessible than it sounds. I asked Claude to build the data pull and had something running in 20 minutes. Do the below: • Register at ads.openai.com and get your Ads API key from account settings • Install the OpenAI pixel on your site and add the lead event to every conversion form • Ask Claude to write a Python script that pulls daily performance data from the OpenAI Ads API across all four levels • Set up a daily cron job to run the script automatically every morning • Ask Claude to add an analysis layer that summarizes what moved, what's off, and what to do about it • Route that summary to Slack or email so the data comes to you CTR is your primary signal, followed by CPC. If CPC starts drifting above your starting bid, competition in your category is picking up. Watch daily spend against budget until you trust the pacing. Two weeks of setup to find out if the squirrel was worth it.

The search bar just became a launchpad for AI agents. At Google I/O last week, Google announced what it is calling the biggest redesign of Search in over 25 years. The reimagined search experience does not just return links. It lets you deploy AI agents that run continuously in the background, tracking topics of interest, synthesizing information from multiple sources, and alerting you to what matters, without you having to ask again. This is a pivotal moment, and not just for Google. When the dominant entry point to the web shifts from "query and browse" to "set intent, let agents act," the implications spread far beyond search. Content discovery, information architecture, and the way businesses communicate with potential customers all need to be rethought. The sites and brands that will thrive in this new environment are not those with the most backlinks or the most optimized landing pages. They are those whose content is clear, structured, and genuinely useful to an agent that is scanning on someone's behalf. The surface area of organic visibility is shrinking while the threshold for appearing in AI-curated results is rising. Your Google search console is hiding a treasure trove of fan-out queries. It's also distorting your analytics. Fan-out queries are the queries used by AI tools to provide you with the best answer possible. They scrape the search results to gather context for their answer. The result is you get hundreds (or thousands) of queries in your Google search console where your site 'ranked' for a query, but it wasn't a human that was doing it. Anywhere between 20 to 60% of the reported queries in Google search console right now are fan out queries done by a bot, not a human. On my personal site, fan-out queries are responsible for 48.3% of all impressions in the last 90 days. Nearly 24,000 impressions from bots. If your CTR has been dropping but clicks remain the same, then it's likely that it's fan out queries to blame. My CTR has dropped from over 5% to 0.1% in the last year. I'm building a tool that turns fan-out query noise into a signal that you can analyze and use. Looking for beta testers for anyone interested.

Want to get more out of your Claude subscription? Start using it directly in your browser. I've been playing around with the "Claude in Chrome" extension lately And it's now become my personal browser assistant. Here's how to set it up: 1. Open Chrome (Note: You need a paid subscription) 2. Go to the Chrome Web Store 3. Install the official "Claude" extension 4. Sign in and pair it with your account 5. Pin the extension and grant the required permissions Once it's set up, you just open the Claude sidebar on any page Group your working tabs together Direct the tasks right inside the panel And watch it execute! Some of the things it can do right now are wild: 1. Analyze your social media analytics and prepare a report 2. Fill out forms, reply to emails, scrape for old mails. 3. Connect with tools like Higgsfield and do image and video generation for you. There's still some limitations, especially Memory. If you run a task, it won't remember the session when you revisit it days later. But I'm confident that'll change in the coming months. For now, I highly recommend giving Claude in Chrome a try. Making reports in Google Ads is always easy with Google's own Data Studio. Sometimes the reports load slowly. So, marketers started using a tool named "Supermetrics". GA4 just quietly dropped a major update. 🚀 On May 13, 2026, Google rolled out a native AI Assistant Traffic channel in Google Analytics 4 That means traffic from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and other AI tools no longer gets buried under Direct or random Referral traffic. GA4 now automatically tags it as: ✅ Medium: ai-assistant ✅ Channel Group: AI Assistant ✅ Campaign: (ai-assistant) No custom setup. No regex. No wasted custom channel group slots. I checked this in my own project data, and the difference is clear. You can finally see which AI platforms are sending traffic, how that traffic is growing, and how it compares with Organic, Paid, and Social. Check the attached image below, where I’ve shown AI traffic data from one of my own projects. One thing to note: GA4 can only classify this when referral data is passed. Some mobile app clicks may still appear as Direct. AI search is already sending traffic. Now you can actually measure it.
