Today, Gigamon released our 2026 Hybrid Cloud Security Survey, and the findings should give every security and business leader pause. We’re seeing a concerning disconnect. At a time when organizations are investing more in AI, more in security tools, and more in governance, breaches are on the rise. The research shows that 65% of organizations experienced a breach in the past year, and 83% report AI is now part of the threat landscape. At the same time, 93% have invested in new security technologies to improve visibility, yet 41% say it’s taking longer to detect breaches. More tools, more data, and slower outcomes. It's no surprise that visibility across all data in motion emerged as the most impactful capability for improving security outcomes. Without that visibility, organizations are forced to make critical decisions based on assumptions. And that is a business risk that no organization can afford. Data sovereignty sounds like control. But the more I think about it, the more I realise that without visibility, it often becomes an assumption instead. An organisation may know: the country where its data is hosted, the cloud provider storing it, and the regulations governing it. Yet still have limited visibility into: which APIs can access that data, which third parties are connected to it, how permissions are configured, where integrations are moving information, or what is actually exposed externally. That’s where things get interesting, because modern environments are no longer isolated. They’re connected constantly through: APIs, vendors, cloud services, third-party integrations, and operational dependencies. For example: A company may store customer data entirely within a compliant regional cloud environment and feel fully covered from a sovereignty perspective… while an exposed API, misconfigured integration, or connected third-party service quietly creates exposure somewhere else entirely. That’s the part many organisations still struggle to see clearly. And I think this is where cybersecurity conversations are evolving: from simply asking: “Where is the data stored?” to asking: “What is actually exposed across the connected environment?” Because sovereignty alone does not automatically equal control.
