Each built for a different problem. --- 5 HANDOVER TYPES EVERY 5G ENGINEER MUST KNOW: TYPE 1 → Intra-gNB vs Inter-gNB Intra-gNB = same gNB, different cell. Internal signaling only. Fastest type. No X2/N2 needed. Inter-gNB = different gNBs. Xn or N2 signaling required. TYPE 2 → Xn-Based vs N2-Based Xn-Based = direct gNB-to-gNB. Lower latency. Default. N2-Based = via AMF. Fallback when no Xn interface. TYPE 3 → 4G↔5G Inter-RAT (EN-DC) Dual connectivity. UE connected to both eNB + gNB. EPC + 5GC split. Data split/aggregation for throughput. The bridge between LTE and 5G SA networks. TYPE 4 → Conditional Handover (CHO) ⭐ New in 5G! Pre-configure multiple target cells. Execute ONLY when condition is met. No more ping-pong. No more dropped calls at high speed. This is the handover revolution for trains, cars, highways. TYPE 5 → DAPS (Dual Active Protocol Stack) Traditional HO = break before make. 40–100ms gap. ❌ DAPS = make before break. ~Zero interruption. ✅ UE maintains TWO protocol stacks simultaneously. Critical for URLLC. Gaming. V2X. Industrial automation. --- THE QUICK RULE: Same site?     → Intra-gNB Default inter-site? → Xn-based No Xn?       → N2-based (via AMF) High mobility?   → CHO URLLC / V2X?    → DAPS --- 5G doesn't just carry more data. It carries it — without dropping you. CHO + DAPS together = the reason a connected car doing 200 km/h never loses its session. That's not magic.
