“Wi-Fi 8 is still a couple of years away from broad enterprise deployment, but the work underway in the IEEE and silicon ecosystems will shape wireless LAN design for the next decade. “For network engineers, Wi-Fi 8 is more than ‘Wi-Fi 7, but faster.’ It’s a reliability-driven release that begins to turn access points into an edge AI compute platform.” — Zeus Kerravala, ZK Research, in Network World ✍️👨💻📰🗞️ https://lnkd.in/eFKFvHNi

Your phone moves. The network moves with it. That's handover. 👇 And in 5G — it's not one mechanism. It's FIVE. Each built for a different problem. --- 5 HANDOVER TYPES EVERY 5G ENGINEER MUST KNOW: TYPE 1 → Intra-gNB vs Inter-gNB Intra-gNB = same gNB, different cell. Internal signaling only. Fastest type. No X2/N2 needed. Inter-gNB = different gNBs. Xn or N2 signaling required. TYPE 2 → Xn-Based vs N2-Based Xn-Based = direct gNB-to-gNB. Lower latency. Default. N2-Based = via AMF. Fallback when no Xn interface. TYPE 3 → 4G↔5G Inter-RAT (EN-DC) Dual connectivity. UE connected to both eNB + gNB. EPC + 5GC split. Data split/aggregation for throughput. The bridge between LTE and 5G SA networks. TYPE 4 → Conditional Handover (CHO) ⭐ New in 5G! Pre-configure multiple target cells. Execute ONLY when condition is met. No more ping-pong. No more dropped calls at high speed. This is the handover revolution for trains, cars, highways. TYPE 5 → DAPS (Dual Active Protocol Stack) Traditional HO = break before make. 40–100ms gap. ❌ DAPS = make before break. ~Zero interruption. ✅ UE maintains TWO protocol stacks simultaneously. Critical for URLLC. Gaming. V2X. Industrial automation. --- THE QUICK RULE: Same site? → Intra-gNB Default inter-site? → Xn-based No Xn? → N2-based (via AMF) High mobility? → CHO URLLC / V2X? → DAPS --- 5G doesn't just carry more data. It carries it — without dropping you. CHO + DAPS together = the reason a connected car doing 200 km/h never loses its session. That's not magic. That's 3GPP TS 38.300 + TS 38.331. --- Save this post. 📌 Which handover type do you work with most in your network? Tomorrow we're hosting the first session of The Connected AI Edge virtual bootcamp series and it's free to attend. We'll be covering public-private 5G roaming, disruptive outdoor Wi-Fi, and programmable networks. I am presenting on something I talk about a lot: how programmable networks change the way business-critical applications should be designed. Most deployments are still treating the network as a static pipe. There's a real performance and resilience gap that comes with that. I'll also close with Pro Tips on the planning decisions most wireless deployments skip. Two other practitioners are joining me to cover: - Deterministic execution for devices to seamlessly roam between public and private networks - Antenna technology delivering 80% TCO savings in outdoor Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + CBRS deployments Wireless Innovations Enterprise Leaders Must Know in 2026 May 13, 2026 · 12:00 PM ET · Virtual · Free Register here: https://lnkd.in/gShUPeM5 Roger Dewey Elaine Healy Ian Watson Jason Claybrook Ratika Garg Timothy Downs Oren Binder Jeff Epstein #PrivateWireless #Private5G #EdgeAI #CBRS #EnterpriseIT #DigitalTransformation #IIoT #Industry40 #VirtualBootcamp
