Why power analysis is key to fighting ICE: Deep research is key to identifying ICE’s pillars of support and building the power necessary to topple them. That's the title of a hot new article in Waging Nonviolence by James VanHise. I have some quotes in the piece, along with my allies at LittleSis, PowerSwitch Action, and several other amazing folks. I shared about research actions and the four power analysis questions that drive campaigns: what do people want, who do people fear, who has power over them and who do they have power over? Why neo-nationalism is actually a protest against the proto-Welfare State system "For decades, the global political elite promised that open markets coupled with basic social safety nets—the proto-welfare state— would lift all boats. Instead, it created an economic vacuum that has left the working and middle classes feeling abandoned, managed, and economically disenfranchised. Here is why the populist surge is actually a rebellion against a broken systemic contract." https://lnkd.in/d8wNbB_V

For a recent episode of The Ballpark, we spoke with Professor Ian Shapiro (Yale University) about the resurgence of populist politicians in many western democracies in the last decade, and how the collapse of inclusive economic growth has led to a crisis of democracy.

New research article from three Weatherhead alums (Evren Balta, Oded Haklai, and Andrew O'Donohue) reveals an interesting finding: the retrenchment of US democracy promotion has enabled autocratization in two US allies—Israel and Türkiye—but to varying degrees and through different pathways. https://loom.ly/Ba5EP5g

Regardless of who or which parties it is.. why is it necessary for us to establish a system that selects an individual or parties to wield governmental power, which ultimately leads to the misuse of that power againts us? Somehow, I find it rather idiotic.

"Last year, more sections of the country’s rivers were reconnected thanks to dam removals than at any other time in history, according to the nonprofit group American Rivers. In 2025, more than 100 dams were dismantled in 30 states, reconnecting around 4,900 miles of waterways, including 156 miles of a branch of the Juniata River that are now reconnected thanks to the removal of Bedford’s two dams. The resulting free-flowing waterways are healthier, cooler and less prone to algal blooms, and serve as vital habitat for migratory fish and other aquatic life." https://lnkd.in/gj6TWk-r

Historic preservation is often about more than just individual buildings. Landscapes themselves have histories. The same is true of built structures, which exist within and reflect the environments and communities that shaped them. People have been shaping the Northern Plains since time immemorial. Practices like controlled burning and selective management did not just influence the environment. They actively shaped it. Even bison were part of this relationship. Sustained human presence helped favor smaller body sizes, large herd structures, and shorter horns over time. What we think of as a natural landscape is often the result of long-term human interaction. That is what makes restoration so complex. It is not just about deciding which plants or animals to remove or reintroduce. It is also about deciding what kind of landscape we are trying to create and how contemporary uses of the land fit into that vision. These same questions apply to buildings and other built features, which are part of the same evolving system. Just as importantly, it raises the question of who gets to be part of that process. Community engagement is not optional in historic preservation. It determines whether projects succeed in the long term. #HistoricPreservation #PublicHistory #CulturalHeritage #LandscapeHistory #EnvironmentalHistory #IndigenousKnowledge #Conservation #Rewilding #HistoricLandscape #CommunityEngagement https://lnkd.in/g-6BxY42

Geofencing to log you into a surveillance system for the purposes of mind control. Time to ditch the phone or have multiple burner phones. Major events, protests, corporations, churches, etc where you take your phone to, opens you up to this geo manipulation. At the November 2021, Melbourne protests the Herald Sun published that geofencing was used but what else was that data used for and how much manipulation happened afterwards. 🤔 The most intense interview that I have ever done was with Professor James Giordano who explained the very complex issues around brain science and the potential abuses by nefarious beings that can use this mind technology against humanity. He worked for DARPA. I don’t see states taking up the mantle unless moved by a disaster- one like the Administration has done should probably count. Talking about something similar to the Iowa Flood Center. The parametric estimate extracted for any state or local government’s quick take-away: “…the average state could do it for about $2 million to start, and then about half a million a year to maintain it.”
The Iowa Flood Center is featured in this recent opinion piece from The New York Times highlighting our director, staff, and incredible partners. I couldn’t be more proud of the work we do in service to Iowa’s communities. This story will resonate with anyone connected to a small town across our nation, and it shows the power of collaboration, shared resources, and strong networks. I encourage you to listen to the audio version, you might even find yourself chuckling a few times. Anthony Heddlesten, P.E., CFM, CEMO https://lnkd.in/gaNdJuhd
