It is a common language for health and is used across different IT systems, healthcare settings, and countries. Therefore, it plays a significant role as a common reference in supporting the exchange of health information. However, despite this importance, the contributions of terminologists remain under recognised and poorly understood across the wider NHS. In this session, we will address the role of the clinical terminologist and why it needs wider recognition and professional support. Attendees will gain an understanding of the structure, capabilities, and benefits of a clinical terminology, and walk through some typical tasks involved in maintaining and using large healthcare ontologies. Patient safety requires a systems-level approach, not just individual excellence. As the first and currently the only center in Israel dedicated to patient safety and risk management in healthcare, we aim to reduce medical errors through structured training and a proactive, preventive approach, grounded in systems thinking, human factors, and continuous learning.
Head of the Ruth and Conrad Morris Medical Simulation Center | Co-founder, Israeli Center for Patient Safety and Risk Management | Simulation-Based Medical Education | AI in Healthcare
Patient safety is not only a matter of individual performance. It is a system-level challenge. Simulation in healthcare is increasingly becoming a strategic platform for addressing that challenge and improving clinical quality. I am proud to share that together with Prof. Yaron Niv and Dr. Yossi Tal, we co-founded the first Israeli Center for Risk Management and Patient Safety in Healthcare, established within the Medical Simulation Center at Ariel University. The center was established two years ago, and since 2023 we have been developing and delivering dedicated training initiatives, including courses and workshops for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, focused on patient safety, risk management, and simulation-based learning. Beyond training, the center is designed to serve as a hub for advancing research in patient safety and risk management. Together with Prof. Yaron Niv and Dr. Yossi Tal, internationally recognized leaders in this field, we are actively shaping its academic and research direction. The center promotes a system-level approach to patient safety, integrating simulation-based methodologies to address clinical decision-making, communication, and risk awareness, while also supporting ongoing research in simulation-based medical education. This initiative reflects a broader shift in healthcare - from focusing solely on individual performance to understanding healthcare as a complex system, where human factors, communication, and decision-making play a critical role. Looking forward to advancing this field through research, collaboration, and innovation. #MedicalSimulation #PatientSafety #HealthcareInnovation #MedicalEducation #HumanFactors #MinistryOfHealthIsrael #משרד_הבריאות #ArielUniversity Yaron Niv

Some conversations don’t just exchange ideas. They shape the future. At CAHOCON 2026, I had the privilege of engaging in a deeply insightful discussion with Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam KG Hospital and Dr Lasya Thambidurai. on medical education and the future of healthcare. What stood out wasn’t just the depth of experience in the room — it was the clarity of direction. We spoke about: • Bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world clinical demands • Building future-ready healthcare leaders, not just degree holders • The urgent need to align education, ethics, and evolving patient expectations • And most importantly — creating systems that sustain quality, not just deliver it Dr. Bakthavathsalam’s perspective reinforced a powerful truth: Healthcare transformation begins in the classroom — but it must translate to the bedside. These are the conversations that matter. Grounded. Honest. Future-focused. Grateful for the opportunity to be part of this exchange of vision and purpose. #CAHOCON2026 #HealthcareLeadership #MedicalEducation #FutureOfHealthcare #QualityCare #HealthcareTransformation #ThinkLikeACOO
