🟡 Becoming Circular | #UIA2026BCN The theme of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona, Becoming. Architectures for a Planet in Transition, unfolds through six interconnected research lines, each questioning what it means to design for a world in constant transformation. Becoming Circular calls for a shift away from linear production towards practices grounded in rehabilitation, life cycles and energy efficiency, prioritising the renovation of existing built heritage, proximity and resource economy to reduce carbon footprints. Together with the other five thematic pillars — Becoming More-Than-Human, Becoming Embodied, Becoming Interdependent, Becoming Hyper-Conscious, and Becoming Attuned — the Congress will explore architecture in its relationship to climate, territory, materials, technology, legislation, data and culture. CONFERENCE CURATORS APPOINTED FOR ARCHITEAM 2027 CONFERENCE ArchiTeam is pleased to announce the appointment of Talina Edwards and Andy Marlow, Directors of Envirotecture, as Conference Curators for the ArchiTeam 2027 Conference. _ The 2027 conference will be shaped around the provocative and timely theme dis-comfortable, inviting the profession to ask: Can we thrive beyond comfort — in practice, in place, and in ourselves? As small-practice architects with nationally recognised leadership in sustainable and regenerative design, Edwards and Marlow bring a deeply values-driven and practice-grounded perspective to the role. Their curatorial vision responds directly to the ecological, economic and personal pressures facing architects today — particularly those operating small and medium practices — challenging long-held ideas of comfort as the primary measure of success in buildings, business and professional life. As the National Retrofit Conference 2026 programme goes live - and with the Warm Homes Plan beginning to roll out - the focus on large-scale retrofit is only intensifying. The conference forms part of a wider set of events taking place at Futurebuild 2026, co-located with UK Construction Week at Excel London, bringing together policy, practice and delivery across the built environment. Within that context, we’ll be asking a bigger question: how do we move beyond “less harm” to genuinely regenerative outcomes? 📍 Wednesday 13 May | 14:45–15:45 | Main Stage | Futurebuild In collaboration with Architecture Today and UK Architects Declare, this session explores what regenerative architecture looks like in practice today, through the lens of the Regenerative Architecture Index (RAI). Chaired by Isabel Allen, the panel brings together practitioners actively working with regenerative principles: • Anna Liu ARB RIBA FRSA (Tonkin Liu) - co-evolving with nature and working with living systems as collaborators • Laura Baron (Purcell) - long-term stewardship and being a good ancestor • Jan Kattein (Jan Kattein Architects) - creating just spaces and the social dimension of regeneration Together, the discussion will connect ecological reciprocity, long-term custodianship and social equity, and what this means in practice now. We’ll also be continuing the conversation around regenerative design and this year’s RAI throughout Futurebuild.
