The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education are launching a national series to profile Opportunity Colleges and Universities (OCU) — institutions demonstrating that broad access and strong student outcomes aren't a trade-off. I'm proud to be part of this work. The series opens with the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). As both an R1 research university and an OCU, UIC makes a powerful case: world-class research and genuine community access can share the same institutional mission. Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda and her faculty have built something worth studying: a mission that holds research excellence and broad community access together, not in tension. Six more profiles will follow over the course of the year, spotlighting the range of institutions that have earned the OCU designation under the new Carnegie Student Access & Earnings Classification. A meaningful initiative. Highlighting institutions that balance research and access can help others learn and apply similar approaches.
Thanks for helping to tell these impressive institutions' stories, Alison Griffin!
Love this concept and Marie Lynn Miranda at UIC!
The impact and messaging around Opportunity Colleges and Universities needs to be lifted up to help shift the narrative a bit around the value add of higher education and the diversity of institutions in the space. I applaud this effort and look forward to other institutions being highlighted.
