We all have a reason for building what we build. For me, it starts with my dad. He ran a dairy farm that eventually shut down. That was my first real exposure to how complex these challenges are. In 2022, I put together an AgTech portfolio of machines used on our farm (link in profile). One of many naive attempts to work on problems I didn’t fully understand yet. At Berkeley, I focused on finance and sustainability. At KPMG, working in carbon markets, I realized that emissions have real value. Then I met Tom, Ethan, and Zac in a UC Berkeley Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SCET) class by Rana Kanaan. It just clicked. Our backgrounds, our technical depth, and a shared belief that we could build something meaningful to take on these challenges. That’s how MOFarm started. Now we’re representing University of California, Berkeley at the ACC InVenture Prize this week at University of Notre Dame. A very important step towards making this dream a reality. Building an AgTech portfolio in 2022 was a “naive attempt”—but without that naivety, we wouldn’t have today’s combination of KPMG’s carbon market expertise and Berkeley’s financial know-how. The fact that a dairy farmer’s son understands that emissions have real value is, in itself, a game-changer. The biggest problem in agriculture has never been a lack of technology; it’s that the numbers just don’t add up. If you treat carbon as the farm’s “second crop,” you’re on the right track.
