Fake news spread yesterday directed at U.S. service members. Hoax or not, the reaction deserves your attention. Most of us carry a device that continuously maps: Where we sleep Where we work Who we meet How we move And we use the same device for personal life, professional coordination, travel, and everything else. The lines can blur quickly for all of us. Let’s not pretend we only operate from government-furnished equipment during business hours. That’s not reality. We must manage exposure alongside the demands of the mission. Build your posture so you don’t panic at the next headline. A few principles worth remembering: • Your phone is broadcasting more than you realize. • Metadata and patterns of life compound quickly. • Default settings prioritize convenience and data collection. • Small changes meaningfully reduce blast radius. • You don't need a complete overhaul. Keep it simple. Security is a habit. Deliberate and sustained. Attached is a five-minute baseline that’s simple to execute and carries minimal downside. There’s a growing push for age verification laws in the name of “online safety.” At first glance, that sounds reasonable. But it raises a deeper question that deserves serious attention: 👉 Should individuals be required to disclose personal information just to access lawful services? In a free society, compelled disclosure should be the exception—not the norm. When laws require people to provide information about themselves (such as age) without their explicit consent, we move into dangerous territory: • It creates friction for accessing lawful content and services  • It raises legitimate privacy concerns  • It introduces new data collection and security risks  • It sets a precedent for expanding required disclosures over time History has shown that legality and legitimacy are not always the same. Many policies that were once considered “standard” were later challenged and reformed. This is not an argument against safety. It’s an argument for principle. Individuals should not be required to justify themselves to the government—or to any system acting on its behalf—simply to participate in everyday digital life.

The Financial Conduct Authority new incident and third‑party #reporting rules will help them respond faster to disruption, from #cyber‑attacks to power #outages. They clearly set out what firms need to report, and when. Clearer rules and practical guidance mean firms can focus on restoring services and reducing harm, while giving better #data to spot risks. While it's important to technologically track the digital footprints of individuals who carry out insider threat type breaches at companies and organizations, it's still crucial to psychologically profile their pre-incident suspicious mindsets and activities. Last weekend I had the privilege of judging at #Cyber912 — a competition that put teams through a scenario involving North Korean infiltration of a managed security provider and disruption to a major sporting event. It was a serious test. And huge thanks to the Atlantic Council for having me and the welcome from my fellow Judges and competitors. Four things stayed with me. The first is organisational. Cyber risk has long been managed as a specialism contained within a CISO's remit, reported upward as a technical matter sometimes to leaders who don't really understand the risks or implications. That never felt sustainable. The speed of damage that can be caused with the help of AI means a new approach is urgent. The scenario made clear that a well-executed operation doesn't just corrupt data — it degrades service delivery, strains legal frameworks, can have physical security implications, and when used in conjunction with other adversarial techniques can drive geopolitical outcomes. This is board-level risk. Governance structures need to evolve. The second is the economics of response. Working through the scenario reminded me that the bill for fixing systemic vulnerabilities after the fact is now so large, and the window to act so compressed, that remediation-centric approaches aren't sustainable. Secure by design can't be an aspiration. It is the only remaining option. Thirdly, meeting competitors from around the world — many of them young, all of them serious — was reassuring. The field is attracting exactly the kind of people you'd want it to attract: curious, rigorous, committed to serving the nation. That's a useful thing to hold onto when the news cycle is doing its worst. Finally, governments are under growing pressure to deploy offensive cyber capabilities — and the case is reasonable. But the risk of blowback is real, escalation ladders are poorly mapped, and the rules of engagement remain contested. None of this is unprecedented. Geopolitics has faced emerging technologies before and found the concepts to manage them — deterrence, arms control, mutual assured consequence. But this is going to require debate and public engagement reaching beyond cybersec specialists.
