MYRIAD, a new project funded by the European Defence Fund, has officially launched as a 48-month European initiative combining artificial intelligence and satellite data to enhance surveillance and defense capabilities. Coordinated by GMV, the project brings together nine leading European partners to develop advanced multi-source satellite imagery analysis technologies, improving the accuracy, speed, and reliability of geospatial intelligence for strategic defense applications. Through four annual innovation cycles, MYRIAD will advance: • AI-driven optical and radar imagery analysis • Performance validation • Demonstration of its solutions in real operational scenarios with end-users. In other words: Airbus-style flagship programmes — but for military capability. One proposal stands out. ⚙️ 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 The study argues that Europe already possesses the technological building blocks for a continent-wide drone ecosystem: sensors, radar, electronic warfare, software, and drone platforms. What Europe lacks is integration and scale. Current EU initiatives such as PESCO and the European Defence Fund are developing pieces of the puzzle — from directed-energy systems for counter-drone defence to command-and-control architectures for C-UAS operations. But the battlefield lessons from Ukraine make one reality clear: Drones are no longer a niche capability. They are becoming the backbone of modern warfare. The report also proposes additional flagship projects including: 🛰 Eastern Flank Watch   🛡 Air Shield   🌌 Space Shield  All aimed at strengthening Europe’s ability to deter conventional and hybrid threats. The underlying message is clear. Europe cannot build credible military power through 27 separate defence ecosystems. 🇵🇱🛰️ Poland has begun work on a first-of-its-kind defense system for Europe: an integrated, multi-domain high-power microwave (HPM) weapon engineered to keep satellites safe in space. Developed by AresShield.AI, the “Sentinel Space Layer” combines artificial intelligence with radar and other advanced sensors to identify and track potential targets for the HPM weapon. It aims to actively protect satellites in orbit from electronic threats while also keeping critical ground and air-based infrastructure safe from drone swarms. “The conflict in Ukraine and the technological advances that have followed … clearly demonstrate how essential the continuous development of defense systems is,” ARES Shield AI Chief Executive Officer Grzegorz Zwolinski said, as quoted by MilMag.
