"New data from Indeed shows where you should focus your tech skills [...] key areas, such as cloud computing, data analytics, and AI development, are still starved for qualified professionals. [...] Here are the top four roles that got cut in AI-inspired reorganizations: Software engineers and developers, Quality assurance engineers, Product managers, Project managers. Indeed found that after such reorganizations, companies often reallocated resources to new tech roles. The evolution mirrors what happened to software engineers a decade ago. Where once you could specialize in just frontend or backend, today's ML engineers handle data pipelines, model development, deployment, monitoring, and business alignment. It's not optional - it's survival. Why this transformation? ML is now core to business operations, not a side experiment. Startups need versatile generalists who can wear multiple hats. FAANG companies have raised hiring standards, demanding breadth alongside system design thinking. The modern ML engineer's toolkit spans data engineering, software best practices, MLOps, cloud infrastructure, and stakeholder communication. Companies win through faster delivery, reduced costs, and better business alignment. Engineers benefit from higher salaries, career resilience, and leadership opportunities. But there's a catch: balancing breadth without becoming a "jack of all trades, master of none." The tool landscape evolves rapidly. Burnout risks are real. Hiring expectations have skyrocketed. Recruiters now prioritize end-to-end project ownership over pure modeling expertise. They want system design skills and business impact communication. The most successful engineers are "T-shaped" - deep in one area, broad across others, constantly learning. The full-stack ML engineer is becoming the industry standard. Every role I’ve taken has been a new learning curve — a new tech stack, a new challenge, and a new way to think. From developing distributed systems and automation with devops to exploring LLMs and DL networks to embedding automation into Identity and Access Management space — every transition felt like moving to a different world. Yet, each one added a unique layer of perspective and adaptability. But here’s the question I keep coming back to: In today’s AI-driven developemt plus the newly developed hiring landscape, does versatility across technologies make you stand out — or do recruiters still value deep specialization in one core domain? And as AI increasingly screens resumes, another thought: Do “keywords” still matter as much, or has storytelling and technical context become the real differentiator in how your skills are recognized? How I'm reading this... welcome anyone elses thoughts on this as well 🙏 🙌 Heads Of Engineering - highest level of interest - lots of movement, a lot of restructures still going on - we're having a lot of "exploratory calls" around roles we're seeing, what we predict the next 12-24 months will look like and teams being built. 🛠️ Staff Engineers - we're seeing a lot more "can build & can lead" roles, where buinesses are happy to spend more, but are looking for more capability per person - smaller, more capable teams mentality after the post-Covid boom. 🚨 Principal Engineers - massive change in technology landscape in 18 months... cloud, AI, ML, data etc - companies MUST capitalise on that shift fast, so we're also seeing a lot more roles with very niche skills but big salaries.
