- [Narrator] There are a few more things that you ought to consider when writing lyrics. First of all, keep your lyric not only simple as we've discussed, but as short as possible. As a lyricist, I live in mortal fear of going on too long in my song. The art and the craft for that matter of lyric writing is to say the maximum amount in the minimum amount of space. So when it comes to editing your lyric, it's always a good idea to ask yourself if you could have said what you said in fewer words. If you can, do it. And if you can't, you're done. One of my favorite examples of this was when I was starting out as a recording studio owner in Nashville. One of the things that experienced songwriters do in Nashville is they find the new kid running a studio who does a pretty good job in the studio and charges like two cents an hour.
