How long should a blog post be?
- Remember when your high school teacher would assign you an essay and you'd ask how long it needed to be? And she'd tell you, to your extreme adolescent agitation it should be as long as it needs to be to make your argument. Yeah, I'm sorry, I'm that annoying teacher. Because when it comes to the length of blog posts I strongly believe your word count should be determined by what you have to say, and how clearly and concisely you can say it. If that's a paragraph or a scrolling, scrolling, scrolling page, so be it. However, there are some other ways to look at the question on length that are worth considering. One is that the average person reads between 150 and 300 words per minute. So, realistically how long do you expect people will be willing to spend on your post? How long do you typically spend reading a blog post? Three to five minutes? That's anywhere from 450 to 1,500 words. It's a pretty good range to aim for when you sit down to write.
