System prompts: The most overlooked step in vibe coding
- AI coding tools can be powerful, but they're also unpredictable. Without guidance, they might choose the wrong language, switch frameworks or ignore your preferences entirely. System prompts act as guardrails, helping to align your assistant with your tools, styles, and goals. You can often set preferences globally across your environment so they apply to every project and/or define them locally for individual projects. That gives you a flexible way to keep your assistant grounded without having to repeat yourself every time you code. So both approaches help you maintain consistency when running your prompts, and each application will have a different place where you can do this. Whether you're new to coding or have some experience, it's a good idea to test out your prompts with a tool like the Claude Console or ChatGPT.
