- Before we start diving into the specifics of running usability tests, let's take a step back to examine the types of usability tests, so we can understand the nuances and set ourselves up for success. The first variant in the usability test is location. Usability tests are traditionally conducted in person, meaning that you are physically sitting next to the participant during the session. In-person sessions have traditionally been run in a usability lab, where you have a dedicated room for the moderator and participant that has audio and video recording, and another room for observers, where the information is streamed. Yes, I'm talking the dreaded one-way mirror set up. These Labs might be at a third-party research facility, or even just a dedicated room of an office. If you don't have a lab, or need to bring the research to the participants, you might still conduct the sessions physically next to the participants.…
