- People like us who make websites are often used to big screens, and may use multiple monitors at once. But imagine that the only way you have to access the internet is through a singular small screen. Many people around the world only use mobile phones to go online. Soon, you'll understand why creating your forms with a mobile-first mentality is so important to trauma-informed design. When I think about designing a great form, a key focus is safety, the first principle of the trauma-informed approach. Imagine people in difficult situations, like abusive romantic relationships. It's vital that they can access information in a safe place. Using their smartphone is safer than a desktop. It's easier to hide. They can also use it when they're alone and have privacy. For those in a violent situation, two minutes alone in a bathroom might be all the time they have. It might be their only chance to find and reach out for help.
