- Ever heard the saying, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." It comes from the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. It was his way of saying that a highly energized, well-functioning team enjoys much greater productivity as a unit than each person would on their own. But what happens when a team is not so productive operating with low enthusiasm, no spark, not feeding off one another to create that greater whole? That's when the organizational energy equation comes in, which is ET equals E1 plus or minus E2. Don't worry, you don't have to be a math genius to understand this. It's actually quite simple. I'll explain. The formula reads like this. The total energy and organization has, ET, is equal to the energy of the employees, E1, plus or minus the energy the leader brings to the table, E2.
