- There are many ways a leader motivates and inspires. There's what they say, different forms of compensation, recognition and reward programs, and many more. But one of the most powerful ways to influence and motivate doesn't involve directly interacting with others. It's being a good example. That's right. You strongly, indirectly influence others just by what they see you do. People are exceptionally good at vicarious learning. As opposed to traditional instruction, this refers to what you can learn by hearing and seeing something. You see, when people are interacting with you they are managing impressions, possibly feeling anxiety, thinking about how to respond and much more. So it's hard to just observe you, and think about you, and learn something about you. In contrast, if they want you in a meeting, see you talking in the hallway or maybe listen to you give a presentation, these are context in which they don't feel…
