When to disengage from conflict professionally

- Sometimes your best or only option for dealing with difficult behavior is to disengage. This might mean disengaging from a conversation, a situation or a relationship. Certain situations call for a temporary pause to create space for emotions to settle, but if professional boundaries are being crossed, if no progress is being made despite multiple attempts or if your wellbeing is being impacted, it might be time to implement an exit strategy. The most professional exit is one that maintains dignity for all parties, uses clear communication and protects your professional boundaries. In this situation, involve your HR manager and be honest with them and yourself about what needs to happen in order for you to move forward. Disengaging isn't giving up, it's making a strategic choice to protect both professional relationships and personal wellbeing.
