- Have you ever felt like something was scary and threatening, but rationally you knew it wasn't a life-or-death situation? That's because thousands of years ago, we had the threats of wolves and bears attacking our villages and families. Your brain got really good at identifying threats in order to ensure your survival and your family's survival. This was helpful back in the day, but as we all know, most of us are not dealing with wolves and bears regularly anymore. Instead, your brain has misinterpreted common situations, like having a difficult conversation with a colleague or missing a deadline, to be threats to your safety. And as a result, you enter a survival state. Your brain is constantly engaging in a process called neuroception, which is where your brain subconsciously scans your environment for danger and threats.
