Ground yourself to help regulate strong emotions

- For many people, grounding can take a few minutes. So this tool utilizes a combination of techniques to help you get yourself back in the present moment quickly. It's a tool created by Elon Shapiro, an EMDR therapist, who found that clients needed a way to calm down fast after challenging emotions arose. It's called the Four Elements, and each element, earth, air, water, and fire, represents a different grounding technique. Complete this exercise with me to experience its positive effects firsthand and return to this later when you need to regulate your emotions. First, for earth, take a moment to sit down and close your eyes, if you feel comfortable doing so. Notice your feet resting on the ground beneath you. You are here in this moment and rooted in this earth. Notice how it feels to be present right here, right now. Second, for air, take three 4-7-8 breaths.
