Manage interruptions and emergencies

- If you work from home and live with others, interruptions are inevitable. While you can't avoid them entirely, you can reduce their frequency and impact with simple strategies. Start by adding extra buffer time into your schedule. For most, I recommend at least an hour and a half of buffer time during a typical workday. This means leaving 90 minutes worth of gaps in your schedule, not counting breaks for flexibility. It may seem like wasted time, but it's the opposite. Without a buffer, constant switch-tasking wastes far more time, and if interruptions don't happen, you'll feel like you've gained bonus time in your day. If you're a caregiver, you might need even more buffer time, possibly an extra hour. Stress often comes from juggling too much at once. When your schedule anticipates interruptions, you'll feel more prepared and less stressed. In addition to buffer time, try scheduling focused transition moments for loved ones.
