Beware of reporter’s traps

- Doing a media interview can feel like you're driving somewhere you've never been before and your GPS is not working. One wrong turn and you can get hopelessly lost. But if you have those digital directions, you can navigate through to your destination with a lot more confidence. It's also critical to know how and where journalists set hazards in the road that you need to steer around. Here are a few important ones to look out for. The interview begins when you shake the reporter's hand hello, and it ends when they're out the door and gone. In that span of time, everything you say is quotable, even the friendly banter, so don't get careless and say something you wouldn't want quoted. Reporters like to get you to wildly speculate on something completely hypothetical, what we call the what-if question. Don't guess about the future, stick to the facts in the present.
