The dystopian approach

- One of the really exciting aspects of philosophy is to work with what we call thought experiments, literally imagining alternative realities and universes to shine new light on whatever subject is discussed. Like, in a different world where I was Swedish instead of Norwegian, what would I end my courses with in place of the phrase, "Lykke til?" We can use these thought experiments in our ethical design processes to push the documented capabilities and effects to their very limits. One popular and quite entertaining way of approaching this challenge is by playing screenwriter for a dystopian Sci-Fi TV show. The last step of this process is to imagine the worst possible outcomes from someone having these capabilities. We call it a dystopian approach because you're imagining a dystopian situation where like, what is the absolute worst things that could possibly happen? And think of this in terms of capabilities.
