- I talk about tech and design ethics a lot, and every once in a while, someone stops me and says, "What does it matter if I'm doing the ethical thing "when there are other people out there "who will just do whatever they want, "and even worse, "what if me being ethical puts me "at a disadvantage over everyone else?" This is one of the core arguments against duty ethics and in particular, against Kant's categorical imperative. In a world where everyone acts in a way they would want everyone else to act, what if there are people or individuals who want to cause harm or who don't care if they cause harm, and want others to do the same? Doesn't the categorical imperative grant them license to do as much harm as they can, and isn't this really individual moral relativism? I call this the problem of very bad people, and it pops up in different circumstances. We know based on previous experience there are companies out there…
