One terrific Tableau capability is the level of detail expression. Most calculations happen at a specific level, and that is determined by the organization of your worksheet. Level of detail expressions let you specify the level at which you want your calculation to occur. And in this movie, I will show you how to define level of detail expressions and give examples of three ways that you can do so. My sample file is 04_05_Level of detail, and you can find it in the Chapter_04 folder of the Exercise Files collection. In this workbook, I have a table that shows sales by state for three regions, and I did that so everything fit on one screen and we didn't have to scroll. The totals that I have in the data area are the total sales broken down by state, and we also have subtotals for each of the regions. If I want to calculate values by state, regardless of the organization of this text table, then I can create a level of detail expression. To start, I will go to the analysis menu. And…
