Define a group

As you work with your data in Tableau, you will probably discover that certain elements go together. For example, if you look at sales regions, as I have displayed here in the sample file 07_01_Create Group, I might happen to know that certain regions are related, specifically the northeast region, which includes states of the North such as Maine and Massachusetts. Central East, which includes states including Maryland and Virginia, and southeast, which has states in the far south of the US, and those include Florida and Georgia. I can combine those three regions into a single group by going over to the sidebar, and then right clicking the sales region pill, then point to create about a third of the way down and then click group. That displays the create Group dialog box, and the first thing I'll do is change the field name from Sales Region Group to East Coast Regions, and then I can select the regions that I want to add, and those will be Central East which I'll click.
