Create a calculated field on a shelf

One way to create a calculated field in Tableau is to create it directly on a shelf, rather than using the Create Calculated Field dialog box. And in this movie I will show you how to do that. My sample file is 04_03_Shelf, and you can find it in the Chapter_04 folder of the Exercise Files collection. In this workbook, I have a text table set up with my product categories and two years. If I want to add a field to the data area, then I can click on any shelf and define it using techniques that I will demonstrate. I'll start by double clicking on the marks card, and that opens the pill for editing. And from here I can type in the name of the fields that I want to use. I will calculate sales by multiplying the quantity of items that were ordered by the price, and then by one minus the discount. So this will be the actual amount of money that the company is receiving. So in the pillar on the marks card I'll start by typing a left square bracket and then price, and you can see that…
