Engaging for change

- A long time ago, in the midst of a transformation effort and major reorganization, a colleague asked me, "Isn't communication the same as engagement?" Well, communication is one way to engage with people, but it's not engagement itself. Engagement is also not the scores your company might collect every year with those surveys. Those are measurements. Remember how I said apathy was the worst? Apathy is a lack of engagement. There are lots of definitions of engagement out there, but I'll keep it simple. Engagement is what happens when people are motivated to be involved. We need to build this for DEIB. So when it comes to engagement, let's keep a few things in mind. First, it's demonstrated by behavior and outcomes. We show engagement by our willingness to have dialogue with others, the amount of effort we put into our work, the meaningfulness we derive from it, and so on.
