- A long time ago, I wrote this about my first year at a company. The job itself, I can do. It's just the environment. What I thought it was going to be, turned out to be very different. Especially when it came to how I would be working with others. A shared understanding or social contract was broken. The concept of social contracts has been around as early as ancient times. Their mutually shared agreements, on how parties are obligated to, and relate to one another. In the work place, we all agree to work together as colleagues. How this happens is usually defined by what it should not be, toxic. The rest is often some unspoken understanding of what working well looks like. This is punctuated by the occasional misunderstanding or conflict. Whatever results from the forming, storming, norming, and performing process. And part of the unwritten rules.
