- In my line of work, I've noticed the disparity between people who have support networks and those who don't. It can sometimes make the difference between confidence and insecurity, connectedness and isolation. But when it comes to sustaining DEIB, having community is a must. Academic and author Henry Mintzberg describes community as caring about our work, our colleagues, our place in the world, and in turn, being inspired by this caring. He goes on to describe how community building in an organization may best begin with small groups. As these groups promote change, they become examples for others that spread what he calls community ship throughout the organization. That space between individual leadership and collective citizenship where people belong.
