Disabled vs. disability

- Often the negativity surrounding the word disability comes from a lack of understanding and the confusion between what it means to have a disability and what it means to be disabled. Disability is not a bad word. It does not mean weakness. It does not equate to being less worthy and it absolutely does not define an individual or their capabilities. Disability describes any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for the individual with said condition, or conditions, to do certain things or activities and or interact with the world around them compared with what is typical. Being disabled is circumstantial to the environment that we are in and the attitudes that people have towards differences. You can think of it this way. Having a disability is a trait. It's static. Being disabled is a state, it's dynamic. Using myself as an example, I'll illustrate this difference for you. I have congenital…
