Figure out your purpose
- In 2014, I was sitting at my desk in San Francisco at a cloud-based accounting firm. I was listening to an audio book by Napoleon Hill, and he was talking about finding your purpose in your life and how important it was. Now, the funny thing about that lesson was I heard it about seven years earlier when I was driving in my car in Virginia, listening to none other than Tony Robbins. Tony Robbins was saying, "The purpose of your life is to write it down. And with that, you will be on the road to success." Now, at the time I was listening to Tony and I was driving my car and I was like, "Tony, I don't have time right now. I'll do it one day." That one day took seven years later, when I heard Napoleon Hill say it. Napoleon Hill said, "Many people will go home and they won't have a purpose in their life. It's like a sailor leaving the shore without a destination. He'll be lost at sea." Now, that metaphor resonated with me because for 14 years I served in the Marine Corps and as a Naval officer, and in the Navy, we would never leave the shore without having a destination because we'd get lost at sea. So in that moment, I took Napoleon Hill's advice, and I took out a pen and a piece of paper, and I started to write down the purpose of my life. Now, when I first started doing that, it was a little wonky, but over time I refined it and I refined it, and I got to the stage where I could recite that the purpose of my life was to bring joy, pleasure, and happiness to those around me, to learn daily, achieve greatly, and always follow my divine creativity so that one day I can say, "I can help as many people around the world live a life of their own design so that they can impact the world with their gifts." That is the purpose of my life. Now in this lesson, what I want to do is help you figure out your purpose in life. So the first thing we want to do is take out a pen and a piece of paper and start writing. What are you passionate about? List out some of the things that you most want to impact in your life. What do you enjoy doing for fun? Next, what are some of your special talents? Some that maybe a lot of people know about and some that maybe no one knows about. You want to create a whole collage of activities and start joining lines connecting dots and connecting to see where things come together. This exercise might take you a few days or a few weeks, and that's okay. You've got time. Because once you figure out the purpose of your life, you will be on a new trajectory that'll be faster, higher, and further than ever before. So after you've written down the purpose of your life, the next thing you want to do is start posting that on a stick-it, note or a postcard, or a note card at your office, in your car, on your bathroom mirror. By doing these, you will start to internalize that purpose of your life. Once you start to internalize it, that's when the real magic happens because your mind does a funny thing. The way your subconscious works is when you give it a problem, it figures out a solution. And so as you walk throughout your day, at times you will start to remember more and more of the purpose of your life. I say the purpose of my life every day, whether it be to myself or to a new person, almost like a prayer to the universe, asking for more guidance to help me figure out my purpose and refine it even more. If you do those exercises, you will find that your purpose is clear, and with a clear purpose comes clear options and opportunities that you can merge together to find the perfect solution so that you can achieve your goals in life. And when you have purpose, becoming a superconnector becomes a whole lot easier.
