- Probably each of us have engaged in that conversation when we recall where we were or what we were doing, or even how we felt at the moment when history was made. It might have been sheer elation when your team won a championship, or total dismay at the death of a major artist. So this is where my complete design nerdiness comes into play. I recall the first time I ever saw the MSN butterfly logo. It was 2000 and a commercial promoting the internet closed with the beautiful transparent wings flapping and coming to rest as the announcer asked, "What can the butterfly do for you?" The reason this moment stuck with me as a designer was I realized we just launched the start of an era, at the beginning of a new millennium. Our toolkits had just been refreshed and we had the license to break some rules. Until this time, the mantra of every identity designer was keep you logos to one color, so you can reproduce them in the Yellow Pages or the phone book. The phone book, really? And God…
