- Everyone has something that motivates them to take action or change their behavior. When it comes to InfoSec, you'll have a lot more success in helping users change their habits for the better if you understand what motivates them. The "New York Times" published a piece in 2018 titled "Science Confirms It: People Are Not Pets." This piece took a hard look at the science behind motivating people into doing what we want them to do. As it turns out, motivation is more complex than just the carrot or the stick. It's not just a matter of reward to punishment. In order to motivate your audience, the first thing you should do is make an effort to see things from their point of view. What motivates them may be different than what motivates you. Consider your security awareness program for a second, what motivators have you built into that program? Gift Cards?
