Producing videos for social media
- I love Instagram stories and reels. They're short, authentic videos that help me feel connected to my friends and the brands that I follow, and they help me find new people and companies to follow too. But these are different from other video formats like YouTube and regular video posts on Instagram. They're different, and that means you have to change your approach for crafting effective stories and reels. And really you need to be posting stories and reels. Reels alone get 22% more engagement compared to regular Instagram video posts. Let's dive in so you can learn to recognize the different elements needed for shorter form videos and how to incorporate best practices into your next video upload. So what's the difference between stories and reels? The biggest difference is in video length and duration. Stories can only be 15 seconds in length, and they last on your profile for only 24 hours before disappearing. You can access them by clicking on the profile photo. If you do want them to live on your profile permanently or at least longer than 24 hours, you can choose to highlight them and they'll live just under your profile description. Stories can only be viewed by the account's followers, so you won't be able to reach new followers with stories if your account is private. Now reels can be up to 90 seconds. They're similar to a regular post because they'll be on your profile indefinitely, so that means they're better for evergreen content that you want people to be able to find again. Reels can be found in a variety of places, including the profiles reel tab, the explore page bonus if you use applicable hashtags and the home feed. So how do you determine if stories or reels are better for your goals? If your goal is to build relationships with your followers, then stories are a great way to do that. And if you're looking for new followers and leads, reels will help you get in front of a broader audience beyond just your current followers. Fortunately, you don't have to choose. Most people and brands dabble with both because they have goals of connecting with their existing followers and expanding their reach and gaining new followers. And just like any goal with social media, it's important that you check out your data when you post stories and reels to understand what's working and what isn't. All right, so now it's time to start posting. Open up Instagram and take a tour through reels. Make a draft post with music, filters and adjust the layout or open up stories and have fun with posting short form content that will disappear by this time tomorrow.
