Leveraging text in your social content
- When looking for a restaurant or book recommendations for the past few years, you probably turn to Google, but today it's more like platforms like TikTok. Popular with Gen Z, users are starting to use TikTok and Instagram essentially as search engines for content such as reviews, or guides, or tutorials. Each social media platform has its own algorithm, which ultimately helps it determine which content to prioritize in a user's feed. If you want your content to be prioritized, then this is the right lesson to check out. After this video, you'll be able to identify where to leverage text throughout your social media and how to ensure it's set up for SEO, or search engine optimization, success. First, some basics about SEO. The intent of SEO is to help users find relevant content. This is often a big keyword play, as in your content should have relevant keywords to increase the chances of being seen by people interested in or searching for the specific topics. Now, there's a few ways to go about this, text within captions and text within or on images or videos. When you approach text within captions, it's helpful to describe what's in your post and check out the most popular hashtags surrounding that topic. On Instagram, for example, you can head over to the Explore page, type in a keyword, and click on tags to see how many users have utilized that specific hashtag. On TikTok, head on over to the Discovery tab and do the same thing. This is especially helpful when you're trying to keep up on branded hashtag challenges, developing content around trending topics, or building community. You should add hashtags in the caption and also in the video itself, as this will help your content rise in popularity. In order to keep a clean aesthetic, you can layer other graphics over the hashtags. And when it comes to how much text should be on each image, the main rule out there is Facebook's ad rule. That platform allows you to post ads with 20% or less text on the image you're advertising. But a lot has changed with the introduction of TikTok and Instagram Reels. Now, you can add captions based on voiceover copy, and it's 100% acceptable, it's even encouraged. Here's a few tips on how much text to add when posting your content. First, pay attention to where you place your text. Try to aim for the center so that the text won't be covered by the various features of the platform when it's live. Also, keep in mind that you can upload a cover image to your reel, and you should include text within that image so people can quickly and easily see what the video's about. I'm sure more will change over time within each social platform's algorithm, specifically as it relates to text-and-image ratio best practices. But one thing we know with certainty is that if you focus on keyword-optimized captions and trending hashtags, it's going to help you increase brand awareness, drive that content engagement you're hoping for, and ultimately get found by more people.
