- Years ago, one of my team members recognized they needed to level up their project management skills to meet their career goals. I was proud of how they advocated for themselves to set their own goals and follow through. Sounds easy, but it can be hard for employees to invest in themselves. Setting goals is a common practice to meet team objectives, but to improve one's self, we must take a different approach through skills-based goal setting. This improves skills and abilities rather than centering on the outcome. This can look like focusing on learning more project management skills in my team member's example. So it's time to partner with your employee to understand their ideas for their own growth. Working together is paramount to strong performance management.
