- Let's dive into the value stream mapping cycle and the symbols that go along with it. The cycle starts with one simple but powerful idea, define value from the customer's point of view. What do they actually want? What matters to them? Sometimes that means putting yourself in their shoes, or better yet, just asking them directly. Once we understand that, we create a current state value stream map. This shows how things are working right now, once and all, then we imagine the future state, a better version of the process with improvements based on what we learned from the current state. Next comes the improvement plan. This is where we lay out the steps to get from current to future state. It's important to have clear action items and assign owners to make sure things actually get done.
