The five principles of lean
- A quick refresher on what Lean actually is. Lean refers to producing what is needed, when it is needed, in exactly the right quantities, with perfect quality, in the least amount of time. It relies on the premise of increasing profits through the relentless focus on the elimination of waste. Toyota's definition says Lean is "The pursuit of perfection via a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating waste through continuous improvement of the Value Stream, enabling the product or information to flow at a rate determined by the pull of the customer." Remember, we are trying to eliminate waste by continually improving, using Lean tools to satisfy the customer. Taking this a step further, there are five main principles of Lean that we must understand. One, specify value in the eyes of the customer. We need to understand the customer and exactly what it is that they want. Two, map the value stream. We need to understand both value added and non-value added waste. That's where…
