The three pillars of Lean
- Let's now discuss the pillars of our lean house. First, we start with just in time. The first part of this pillar is pull. There are three basic types of the pull system: replenishment pull, sequential pull, and mixed pull. In all three cases, the important technical elements for systems to succeed are: one, flowing product in small batches approaching one piece flow where possible; two, pacing the processes to takt time to stop overproduction; three, signaling replenishment via a Kanban signal; and four, leveling of product mix and quantity over time. Note that takt time is the rate at which work must be performed for a customer demand to be met on time. Next up is flow. A continuous flow is a method of manufacturing that aims to move a single unit in each step of a process, rather than treating units as batches for each step. Finally, we have Heijunka, which refers to leveling. This is done in order to meet demand while reducing waste. A nice cell design ensures waste is minimized…
