Product families
- Let's talk about product families, because grouping things the right way from the start can save a ton of time and effort later on. The idea is simple. We group products or services into families based on how similar their processing steps are. Why? Because if we don't, we'll end up mapping every single step for every single product, and that's just not efficient. Once grouped, these families become what we call value streams. To help figure out which products belong together, we can use a simple matrix. It's a handy tool that helps us visualize and organize the groupings. Here's how we go about defining product families. One, start by identifying the product or service families within your organization. Two, check if everything in that family follows the same process. If they do, great, that's one value stream.
