- I've been in my current job for more than 20 years. In that time, my department has grown from 15 people to over 60. Since one of my jobs is helping new employees get oriented, I've used a lot of different strategies to get to know new coworkers. Some of those strategies were really terrific. Others, not so much. It's exciting to meet new teammates, but it can also be stressful, not just for you, but also for your new colleagues. Let me share with you some of the best things I've seen people do when they first meet coworkers or joined a team. First, understand that the interview is over. You've already been selected for the job. So you don't need to promote yourself like you did to get hired. Your new colleagues aren't figuring out whether they want to work with you or not, that's been decided for them. Instead, they want to know what working with you is going to be like.
