- My favorite quote from poet Maya Angelou reminds us that people won't remember exactly what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel. That's why it's important to avoid bragging. A standard dictionary definition of bragging explains why we want to avoid it. Bragging is pompous, excessive and arrogant. See, bragging makes the other person feel like they don't matter to you. Your only focus is on yourself. You're not making an effort to know or engage others. It can damage relationships, and that's just not a good way to make connections, and even if you're not a bragger, well, talking too much or too long can make people treat you like one and avoid you.
