Setting up for success
- [Instructor] Before we dive into tables and flows, let's zoom out. Imagine six months from today: tickets close faster, teams focus on meaningful work, and manual chores are fading away. That future hinges on what we do right now, building dev, test, and prod as distinct well-lit hangars and practicing in a personal development instance where crashes cost nothing. Lay that runway once and every takeoff afterwards will feel smoother. Great pilots run a checklist. Great admins do, too. When trying things out in your instance, it's best to keep that omnipotent admin separate from day-to-day platform owner duties. So, let's have different accounts going. Capture a clean baseline, make sure you've enabled audits, and schedule update set backups just so that nothing goes wrong. Finally, snapshots beat regrets. Have one before experimenting with new features or making big changes. As an administrator, you're not just filling out forms, you're shaping how the business works. Every field tweak ripples through satisfaction scores, audit trails, even compliance. Think in end-to-end processes. Partner with stakeholders, leave breadcrumbs in your documentation. Do all the things so that future you or the next admin can easily follow the logic that you did. ServiceNow lets you customize almost anything, but that power is a double-edged sword. Resist the urge to customize every single screen. Keep your plugins lean, your names as predictable as possible, and each configuration tied to a real business outcome. Remember, you're never going to be alone. You can lean on the documentations, the community, and support whenever turbulence hits. Take a breath. You're about to turn theory into impact. Tackle each feature with intent. I want you to ask yourself, "How does this help someone today?" Build it in the Personal Developer Instance. Measure the gains, refine it, and then roll it to your production. With that mindset, you're not just administering a platform, you're driving organizational success. Let's move on to the fundamentals that make that all possible.
