From the course: Securely Migrating to AWS

What is cloud migration?

- In just 2020, 61% of businesses moved their workloads to the cloud, and here's something even more mind blowing. From 2010 to 2020, the global cloud computing market skyrocketed by an incredible 535%. What is cloud migration and why are businesses flocking to the cloud at such a staggering pace? Let's get into it. Cloud migration is the process of moving data, applications, and other business components from on-premises servers to the cloud. Simply put, it's when businesses take their data and apps from their own data center and servers and move it all online to the cloud. Think of it this way, moving your entire digital life, photos, music, documents, from a single laptop to an online storage service, that's cloud migration on a personal scale. For businesses, it means moving data, applications, and IT processes from physical servers within their premises to the cloud. This transition allows for managing data over the internet, offering enhanced flexibility, scalability, and the foundation for innovation. Netflix's migration from DVD rentals to streaming services is a classic example. They transitioned their entire data operations to the cloud to handle massive global streaming demands efficiently, mirroring how businesses move data and applications for better scalability and performance. They went from sending DVDs in the mail to streaming to your devices anywhere in the world thanks to the cloud. This move let them scale up big time, reaching more of us without skipping a bit. That's the power of moving to the cloud, endless scalability and getting new stuff out faster. Deciding to move to the cloud is one thing, but picking the right kind, public, private, or a mix of both, known as hybrid, is another. It's all about what works best for your businesses. Need tight security? Private might be your go-to. Looking for flexibility and easy scaling? Public could be the answer, or maybe a bit of both suits you. Making the move to the cloud comes down to a few steps. Figuring out what you are going to move, planning how to do it, making the move, and then making sure everything's running smoothly. Each step is key to not just moving to the cloud, but making the most of it once you're there. With so many businesses moving to the cloud, it's clear this transition is more than a trend rather than the future. And with the market growing over the last decade, and in 2023, 94% of companies use cloud services, there's no better time to explore what cloud could do for you. Think about how the cloud could transform your businesses. Whether you are a small shop or a big enterprise, there is something in the cloud for you. In the next video, let's look deeper into the benefits and drivers behind cloud migration for businesses.
