Defining a challenge

- One of the most important parts of your narrative arc is going to be the challenge, defining the challenge. And in a nonfiction piece, you might find this actually a little difficult. What is the challenge? Hopefully you don't just have a laundry list of bullet points that you have to get through, because if you do, it's going to be very hard to find this very important piece of the story. So if you're talking about, let's say, the development of a new technology, or an organization is going in a new direction, that has to be boiled down into some kind of challenge that the organization had to overcome or the group that was building the technology had to accomplish in order to get to the climax. So try to think of your story elements in terms of where is the challenge here, what's the central part of this story? It's going to be a little easier to do this if you only have one or two characters in the story. So, particularly if you're interview driven, it's going to be a lot easier…
