- When I first started selling cars, I found it very easy to approach and strike up a conversation with a prospect on the dealer's lot. Unfortunately, in the first few weeks, however, despite plenty of discussions, I didn't sell any cars. I couldn't put my finger on what the issue was until I received two calls from prospects who I'd spoken with. Both calls had a similar theme, which was, "Sean, it was great meeting you. However, I wanted to let you know we've purchased a car elsewhere." I was completely baffled. These potential customers who were ideal to buy a car from us, we had cars and stock that suited their needs, took time out of their busy schedules to tell me I was great, but not good enough to buy from. It was an existential moment. After speaking with my manager I realized what the problem was.
