When I started my first business, one of the first things I did was join my local Chamber of Commerce. I was excited. I thought I was about to unlock a treasure trove of networking opportunities. But after a few meetings, I realized something was wrong. The room was full of great people, but most of them sold consumer products or services like lawn care and pest control, while I was there running a B2B technology company. Not all networking is good networking. Just because there's a room full of business owners doesn't mean it's the right room for you. We didn't align.
