- Depending on where you work, most companies will tie pay and promotional offers with annual performance reviews. While it may be an old-school approach, plenty of companies still run that way. If that's the case, make sure you can answer these questions to your employees' satisfaction. What is the company policy on raises or promotions, whether they're written or merely a long-time practice? How transparent is that decision-making, and realistically, what opportunity do great performers have to advance in pay and title? During my litigation days, I saw managers giving lowered evaluations to avoid having to discuss the possibility of a promotion or wage increase. This only demotivates the good performer. There are plenty legitimate circumstances where good performance can't be rewarded with a promotion or improved pay, but rather than manipulating their performance review, be honest why they're not receiving a promotion or wage increase and be realistic about the likelihood of…
